SHARK CAGE DIVING

Geyser Rock, some 15 nautical miles west of the Gansbaai shore is home to approximately 60, 000 Cape Fur seals, the big attraction for the mysterious and graceful Great White Sharks earning the reputation of being “the Great White Capital of the World”TM. Alongside this island is Dyer Island, housing breeding colonies of the endangered African Penguin, Cape Gannets, and a number of species of Cormorants, along with pelagic sea birds which visit this area. Between these 2 islands is the famous Shark Alley, famous for the Great White Shark predation on the seals.

Whale Watching in Gansbaai

Southern right whales spend the summer months feeding around Antarctica and then migrate thousands of kilometres to the sheltered bays of South Africa to mate and calve. They can be seen along the coast between June/July and December.

Boat based watching

Boats leave from either Kleinbaai or Gansbaai and encounter the gentle giants of the water. They are naturally curious and approach the boats so that you get to see them really up close.

BEACHES IN GANSBAAI

Coast of contrasts” is a cliché, but one that is highly applicable to the shores of the Gansbaai Area. As a rule of thumb, the shores to the North of Danger Point (Walker Bay) is where the Southern Right Whales hang out and the shores to the East of Danger Point (Shark Bay) is where the home and breeding grounds of the Great White Shark are. Again, as a rule of thumb, the Walker Bay coast is rocky and dotted with caves and cliffs and the Shark Bay coast exists of pristine never-ending white sand beaches. Checking a rule of thumb at any given time will often prove this rule wrong. Bays with pristine sand beaches can be found along Walker Bay and troops of whales might very well float by your side when you stroll along the sand-beach of Pearly Beach.

NATURE RESERVES

The main reason that the Gansbaai Area has become a premier nature destination and one of the reasons was awarded the Responsible Destination, is the fact that conservation of both the marine- and land-based nature has been embraced by all layers of society. Conservation in this area is not restricted to the several public nature reserves. Many private landowners have embarked on extensive alien-vegetation clearing operations as well as the restoration of indigenous vegetation and reforestation.

African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust has built a world class seabird sanctuary in Gansbaai, a first for the Overstrand area.

The African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) has been set up to assist the endangered African penguin colonies of Dyer Island, an Important Bird Area, where the species has declined dramatically over 30 years, almost 90%.
